Setting up your computer for connecting to the Internet involves several issues which I will cover here. Check this link for settings for Maui Net, Hawaiian Tel, Road Runner, and also setting up mail from Infoquest if you have a domain there.

First of all, you need to setup a dial-up connection if you are using a modem to connect to your ISP. Go to the Start button, click on Programs, Accessories, (In Windows 95 next click on Dial Up Networking), in Windows 98, ME, and XP, click on Communications, then click on Dial Up Networking. Now, double click on Add. The wizard will start up.

In the Name box, type the ISP name. In the next box, type the phone number, and in the last box, hit Finish.

In the Dial Up Networking window, you will now have an icon for the dial-up you just created. Move your mouse cursor over the new icon and click the Right mouse button. Left click on Properties and the box to the left will open up. Uncheck the Use area code box.

Make sure the boxes are checked the same as on the left. In Windows 95 and 98, there is another box at the top of the advanced options to log onto the network which should not be checked. If NetBEUI and IPX/SPX are checked, the logon will take longer. Now you can click OK on all boxes to get back to the Dial Up Networking screen. You will have to actually dial up and log on before the username and passwords will be saved.

We can now dial the Internet so the next step is to set the Options.

These settings apply to a modem connection. Go to Control Panel and double click on the Internet Options icon. Click on the Connections tab and select Dial whenever a network connection is not present. In the list, find the designation for the new dial up you created, click on it, and then click the Set Default button.  If you have ADSL or Road Runner, click on Never dial a connection and you are done.   For modem connections, click on the Settings button.

This screen will now appear.  Now, click on the Properties button.

This screen will open up on the General tab, so, click on the Dialing tab and click on the settings as shown here.  Click OK to everything and you are done except for e-mail settings.

Since there are so many e-mail programs, you will need to check your program for where to set the mail accounts up.  The setting values, for Maui, can also be found here.
