Have you ever been frustrated trying to remember where you put the information on your credit card, insurance policy, retirement account information, or web passwords?  Well, there's an easy, safe way to put this information into one document where it is available and easy to find.  You can use Microsoft Excel and put the information in a workbook with information on individual sheets so that like information is on the same sheet.

While in Excel, you can rename the sheets in the workbook by right clicking on the tabs and then left clicking on rename.  If you need additional sheets, just go to the Insert menu and select Worksheet.

Once you have the sheets you want, you can start inputting the information on everything.  Be sure to make a sheet for every conceivable thing you may want to look up.  This is really great since everything is in one place.

Once you have all the sheets you want, go to File, Save As, the click on the drop down arrow next to Tools, and select General Options.

Now, when the following dialog box pops up, put in the password you want to use in the Password to open box.  This is really the only thing you want to do, then click OK.

This will save the file so that if you go to open it, you will need to enter the password in order to have access to the information.  Even if the file gets into the wrong hands, they will not be able to see what is in the file, even if they use a disk editing utility, since Excel, and all office programs, scramble the information in the file so that you need the password in order to read it.  This handy feature is also useful for Word documents you want to protect.

This is a great way to keep all the information you need at your finger tips.  If you want to go the extra step, you can also create sheets for an inventory list of everything you own.  If you keep a copy in a safe place, if you were to have a fire or some other catastrophic event, you will have a complete inventory list to give to your insurance agent to get reimbursed.
