June 1, 2011 Does your router seem slow when using the wireless connection? Wireless connection speeds are typically only about 15 - 20% of the speed you get when you hook up to your router with an Ethernet cable, but there are many factors which will affect the wireless speed. I don't want to get too technical, so in laymen's terms, the frequency your router uses to talk to your computer can vary depending on the age of your router. There have been several different sets of designs for routers, but today, there are two distinct differences you should be aware of. Some routers only use the frequency band of 2.4GHz. and some of the newer routers also use the 5GHz range. The reason this can make a difference is that many household appliances also use the 2.4 GHz range. Some examples are remote controls for TV's DVD players, etc., cordless phones, microwave ovens, baby monitors, older Bluetooth devices, etc. Again some of the newer devices also use the 5 GHz range which allows more things to run at the same time. Also keep in mind that if you see any other routers in the list when you browse all available networks, these can also interfere. All items within range of each other can slow things down. iPads, some gaming devices, TVs, etc use the newer dual range setup which helps spread out the area and keeps the items from slowing each other down. So what can you do to help? When you purchase a router, look for a dual band 802.11N MIMO rated router. Be aware these routers will be higher priced than routers only using the 2.4GHz band. Also, when purchasing other items like baby monitors etc., make sure they use the 5GHz range. If it appears the speed is slower than it should be you can also check the security setting of the router itself. The higher settings can slow the router speed down. Also, if you have a router with external antennas, experiment moving the antennas at different angles or physically moving the router (even a small distance can make a big difference). Also be aware that building construction, wiring and piping in the walls, etc. can all make a difference. You may have to try different things but in the end, it may increase your speed.
