May 15, 2004 To update or not to update, that's the question. Most programs now have a web check for updates to the programs. This also includes Windows and the antivirus programs. I tend to find a lot of people are uneasy about using the auto update features. The guidelines I personally follow are listed here in case you want to consider your options. The newer programs and Windows have automatic updates which take the guess work out of keeping current. One piece of advice, if your using Windows ME or XP, set a restore point before you do an update just in case something doesn't go right. I can't say that I have had any customers who have had a problem with the update installing, but there have been some problems with little things so if you want to, you can go back to before the update was done using the system restore. Windows update is a definite to do. The main reason is, Microsoft is constantly coming up with patches to fix security problems with Windows and components like Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. These patches are a must have. Another important thing to do is check for service releases. Right now there is a service release for Windows XP which contains some important updates that the regular Windows update will not add to your system. Auto update for virus definitions is a must have for sure. Don't take any chances, have the antivirus program automatically check and update for you. Microsoft Office updates are also a good idea. Again, make sure to set a restore point first. Program updates are an individual matter. In the past many of my customers have been using Quick Books and then letting their accountants take the files to do the taxes, etc. The problem with this is, when you do an update to the program, it will convert your data files. Now, you can't go back and open the files in the program unless it is updated. The drawback to this is both you and your accountant must be on the same update version of the program. If you get a new computer and install the program on the new computer you won't be able to open and use your data files until you do a web update because the program will say the files were created in another version of the program so you won't be able to open them. Not all programs work like Quick Books as far as the updates are concerned. Most updates fix problems and many times also add features or templates to the program you have. I am religious about updates and keeping my virus protection current. I have not had any problems with any viruses getting through to my computer. If you're uncomfortable about the auto updates, then the world won't end if you don't do them but you may have more problems than people who do the updates, that's your decision.
