Customizing the Windows Desktop Continued

One thing I'll suggest here is, BEFORE you start making changes, click here for information on how to set a system restore point.  If you get things all hosed up, you can just do a restore and then you don't need to panic trying to figure out what you did wrong.

Clicking on the Customize Desktop button allows you to change desktop icons, select which icons you want displayed, and whether or not to run the desktop wizard. I usually uncheck the desktop wizard since it is not smart enough to know I only want certain icons on the desktop and even though I haven't used some icons recently, I still want them there. Personally, I turn off all the desktop icons so I can see an uncluttered picture, and I put the icons I use on the taskbar quick launch area next to the start button. NOTE: Windows XP users have a handy setting, if you right click on the desktop, click on Arrange Icons By, then uncheck Show desktop Icons. This will turn off all desktop icons.

The Screen Saver tab allows you to select the screensaver you want to use, and also change the settings on that particular screen saver, if there are any customizations you can make.  The Power button allows you to change power management settings. My advice on these settings, is set everything available to Never. Power management has caused many problems and now, most computer manufacturers have these setting turned off.  Click here for a discussion about power management features in Windows
