Searching for Files

Searching for a file or folder is easy using Windows Explorer, or, depending on which version of Windows you have, you can also go to Start, Programs, then click on either Search or Find.

The search box to use is shown below. (NOTE for Windows XP users: To get this box when you start up a search, click on Change files and folders search behavior, then click on Advanced, and then OK.  Now click on More Advanced Options and make sure the items Search System Folders, Search Hidden Files and Folders, and Search Sub Folders are all checked.)

Search Tips: You don't have to type in the whole file name, for instance, let's say you are looking for a file called today.doc.  You can just put in today and it will find all files which contain the name today.  It will also find todays, today.xls, etc.  If you don't want anything other than the exact name, put it in parentheses for instance "today.doc".  You can also look for files with a certain date, certain size, etc.

You can also use the left pane to find files on CD's and camera memory, etc.  Another useful tool is you can also find drives and folders on other computers by clicking on My Network Places (My Network on earlier versions of Windows).
